Five minutes that decide how bad this gets

Do this whoever you end up calling. Half of what turns a fix into a rebuild happens in the hour before anybody qualified looks at it.

Do this now
  • Take a full backup now — files and database — even of the broken state
  • Screenshot the exact error, including anything that looks like a file path
  • Write down when it last worked, and what changed around then
  • If you suspect a compromise, change the hosting and admin passwords
  • If it is serving spam to visitors, put a holding page up while you sort it
Whatever you do, don’t
  • Don’t delete files that “look wrong” — that is the evidence, and often the site
  • Don’t reinstall WordPress over the top; it hides the cause and rarely removes it
  • Don’t restore an old backup before somebody has looked — it can reintroduce the hole and destroy what would have shown us where it was
  • Don’t buy a security plugin subscription mid-incident; it will not remove what is already there
  • Don’t let anybody remote in who will not say in advance what they intend to change

The whole site is down

Usually the host, an expired certificate, or a database that has stopped answering.

A blank white page, no error

Almost always a fatal PHP error with error display switched off. The log says exactly which file, and most people never find the log.

Google or the browser is warning people

Injected content somewhere. Cleaning it is the easy half; finding the way in and closing it is the half that stops it recurring next month.

Pages you never made keep appearing

Spam injection, usually through an out-of-date plugin. Deleting the pages without closing the door means doing it again on Thursday.

Nobody can log in to the admin

A locked-out admin, a hijacked account, or a plugin conflict. Recoverable from the database in nearly every case.

It broke straight after an update

A conflict between two things that were both fine yesterday. If there is a backup, this is often the quickest fix on this list.

Checkout or the contact form silently fails

Email delivery or a payment integration, and the worst kind of fault because nothing looks wrong. You find out from the quiet.

The developer has stopped replying

The questions people ask at speed

Is the diagnosis really free?
Yes, and you keep the write-up even if you go elsewhere with it. It is worth it to us because a rescue quote given without looking is a guess, and guesses are how these jobs go wrong for both sides.
How quickly can you look?
Same working day for anything down or compromised. Tell us it is urgent when you get in touch — a slow site next week and a checkout that stopped taking money this morning are not the same queue.
Do you need full admin access?
To diagnose, usually read-only access to the files, the database and the hosting panel. To fix, we agree exactly what we need and you can revoke all of it the moment we are done.
What if it cannot be saved?
Sometimes that is the answer, and you will get it straight — including when the honest recommendation is a rebuild that we are not the cheapest people to do. Better that in the write-up than after three weeks of billed hours.
Do I have to sign up to anything afterwards?
No. We hand back documentation and access, and plenty of people take it from there themselves. If you would rather it stopped being your problem, a care plan is there, but the fix does not depend on it.
The site was built by someone else. Does that matter?
Not at all — most of this work is somebody else’s code. We do not need their cooperation to work out what is there.
